Timber Back Rails for Fencing

How Many Back Rails Does a Fence Need?

• Fences over 1.8m (6ft): may require additional or more closely spaced rails

The correct rail spacing is important to ensure the fence boards are adequately supported and to help the panel withstand outdoor weather conditions.

How to Install Fence Back Rails

Back rails are fitted to the rear of the fence panel, rather than between the fence posts. Once the fence posts and panels are correctly positioned, the back rails can be fixed horizontally across the vertical boards using suitable exterior-grade screws or nails.

For the best result, ensure the rails are straight, evenly positioned and securely fixed to the fence boards. The number and position of rails should be appropriate for the overall height and weight of the fence.
